Southeastern University’s (SEU) Department of Social Work will host their annual Social Work Community Night on Tuesday, April 11, at 6 p.m. in the Welcome Center’s Lake Bonny Room on the university’s Lakeland campus. This year’s event, entitled “In Plain Sight,” will feature guest speaker David Magee, bestselling author of “Dear William: A Father’s Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love, and Loss.” The event will provide education on the risks, emerging trends, harm reduction efforts, pharmaceutical accountability, and increased overdose and deaths associated with the opioid and fentanyl epidemic. In addition to the main speaker, there will also be a panel of local experts from Polk and Orange Counties to discuss the impact the crisis has had on their surrounding communities. The event is free and open to the public. Two free Continuing Education units (CEs) will be available for clinical social workers, marriage and family counselors, and mental health counselors in attendance. Magee is a highly sought-after speaker in schools and universities nationwide, addressing students and parents about mental health and substance misuse challenges and solutions. Magee is the host of “The Mayo Lab Podcast with David Magee,” a national recovery advisor for the Integrative Life Network, and the creator and director of operations of the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing at the University of Mississippi — an institute named after his late son, William. He has also been a media company president, an award-winning columnist for newspapers and Newsweek, and a regular guest on CNBC.
