Local Pilot Helps Deliver Six White Mute Swans To Lakeland Community

LAKELAND, FL (April 21, 2025) - The City of Lakeland recently acquired six White Mute Swans to introduce fresh genetics into the local swan population. Diversifying the gene pool is vital for the long-term health, vitality, and resilience of the flock. It helps prevent inbreeding, supports disease resistance, and enhances adaptability to environmental changes—ensuring the continued viability of this cherished local population.

These new swans come from a respected breeder in the Chicago area. While shipping them commercially wasn’t financially feasible, local aviation enthusiast Mike Araldi, President of Quest Air Services generously stepped in. After learning about the need during this year’s Sun 'n Fun event, Araldi volunteered to fly his private plane to Chicago and bring the swans back—completely at his own expense, as a gift to the community

This marks the first time since 1957 that White Mute Swans will arrive in Lakeland by plane. That year, two swans were gifted to the city by Queen Elizabeth, and today’s flock are their descendants. Araldi and the six new swans are expected to arrive at Lakeland Linder International Airport today around 4:00 p.m.

Dr. Price Dickson, the City’s swan veterinarian at My Pets Animal Hospital, has long recommended expanding the gene pool to combat health issues linked to inbreeding. The arrival of these swans is a significant step toward maintaining a healthy and sustainable flock for years to come. The swans will be released on Lake Morton after a thorough health check by Lakeland’s swan vet.
