LAKELAND, FL (December 19, 2024) - Gandy Pool will close for a resurfacing project starting January 2, 2024. This marks the first major resurfacing since the pool was last renovated in 2004. The project, which is estimated to cost $433,000, is part of the City of Lakeland's ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving its public recreation facilities. The resurfacing will include a new quartz aggregate finish, along with the removal and replacement of pool tiles, including wall targets (used in competitive swimming) and lane lines. The upgrades will ensure that the pool meets USA Swimming regulations for use in sanctioned swim meets, providing a top-tier experience for competitive swimmers. The contract for this work has been awarded to Finishing by Baker, a contractor based in Naples, FL. City officials are optimistic that the project will be completed on schedule, and Gandy Pool will reopen in early April 2024. While Gandy Pool is closed, the City of Lakeland is making every effort to accommodate lap and open swimmers. The Recreation staff has partnered with the YMCA to offer an alternative option during the closure. Additionally, Simpson Park Pool will remain open with limited hours throughout the week. Please note that Simpson Park Pool is unheated, and staff will provide updates on pool temperatures so swimmers can plan accordingly. Swimmers can purchase a daily or weekly pass from the YMCA of West Central Florida. Call the YMCA at 863-267-9622 for more information. For more information about alternate swimming options or Simpson Park Pool operational hours, please contact the Aquatics staff at (863) 834-3157 or via email at aquatics@lakelandgov.net. Ongoing updates on the project, including alternative swimming options and hours, will be available at Lakelandgov.net/Swimming. The City of Lakeland thanks the community for their understanding and support as we work to improve Gandy Pool for future generations of swimmers. Gandy Pool, situated at 404 Imperial Boulevard adjacent to the Kelly Recreation Complex, offers a 10-lane, 25-yard heated pool with a one-meter diving board and shallow recreational pool. Accessible features include a handicap ramp at zero depth and a hydraulic lift chair. Amenities include vending machines, lockers for personal belongings, lap lanes, time clocks, bleacher seating, shower/changing rooms, and personal floatation devices.
