SPCA Florida volunteers will depart Thursday, February 15th, to drive 35+ homeless cats and kittens to their new home in southern Ohio. In partnership with two Ohio no-kill shelters, Humane Society of Greater Dayton and Fayette Regional Humane Society staff and volunteers will welcome the cats and kittens on Friday, February 16th. The felines will be fully vetted and spayed or neutered according to an agreement between the three no-kill organizations. “In the north, we are overwhelmed with cats and kittens during the warmer months, while we have very few in the winter. We are very happy to be able to use our resources to help cats in Florida, where they are working to find homes for cats and kittens year round, and we are especially delighted to help Polk County become a no kill county.” said Dr. Lee Schrader, Executive Director Fayette Regional Humane Society. Transports to approved shelters in northern states who need kittens is one-way SPCA Florida is saving lives. “We are exceedingly grateful for the lifesaving support from our no kill partners to the north. Their willingness to stretch to help Polk County homeless animals is not only life changing but the epitome of the collaborative efforts throughout our nation to become a more humane country. We applaud their heart and their help,” said Shelley Thayer, Executive Director, SPCA Florida. Brian Weltge, President & CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton said, “We are excited to partner with SPCA Florida to help save the lives of cats in their community. The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is a no-kill organization and our community became a no-kill for the first time in 2019! We are thrilled to help another community striving to save the lives of cats and dogs! This will be an amazing partnership and together, we will make an incredible difference in the lives of animals in both communities.” These transports can only happen due to donations and volunteer drivers.
