Jamaican Jerk Kitchen held their Backpack/School Supplies Giveaway for the Polk County School District Saturday, 8/12. "We have been requesting donations since 7/1," said Katrina Binns, manager at Jamaican Jerk Kitchen. The giveway event was held on Saturday 8/12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Backpacks with school supplies were given to children in need of various supplies for school. "Our goal this season is to support our students and their families through our collaboration with our customers and supporters. This community building event brings together Polk County Students, families, community agencies and educators to help ensure that students get back to school and have a sound and healthy start to this school year," said Binns. About Jamaican Jerk Kitchen Jamaican Jerk Kitchen owner Omar “Bunny” Whynter was born in Jamaica and raised here in Lakeland. He learned to appreciate and enjoy cooking at a young age by watching his aunts, mother and grandmother. It’s safe to say the women in his family helped hone his culinary skills. 5 years ago, Omar decided to leave his job of 17 years at Publix and open his own restaurant and food truck. His tasty Caribbean flavors and family recipes have been a big success and created quite a following. His menu offers all the Caribbean Island’s staples such as Jerk Chicken and Jamaican Beef Patties. Omar will continue to please the palates of his continually growing‘Caribbean Food Fans’ and continue to strive for excellence in community service.
