LAKELAND, Fla. — Southeastern University’s (SEU) School of Music will be holding a Piano Spark Concert Series beginning on Friday, January 27, in the Buena Vida West Auditorium on the university’s Lakeland campus. The series will consist of three consecutive concerts that are open to the public and free to attend. “The inspiration behind this series is to showcase our adjunct and staff pianists, piano faculty and a special guest,” said Dr. Charles Hulin, an associate professor of music at SEU. “Our hope is that this event will ignite the imaginations of our piano students, our university community and of art enthusiasts in Lakeland.” The first concert will be held on Friday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m. SEU’s piano faculty and collaborative staff will perform a survey of historical keyboard composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Ravel. The second concert is scheduled for Saturday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m.featuring guest artist and prize-winning pianist Ariel Dechosa. He will be presenting a recital with works exploring the inspiration of Schubert and selections from Liszt’s virtuoso transcriptions. The last concert of the series will be on Sunday, January 29, at 2:30 p.m.Hulin will perform piano works with Christian themes, including Castelnuovo Tedesco’s “The Words.” He will also be performing Morton Gould’s jazz-infused, two-piano “Interplay” alongside Dechosa. Dechosa currently serves as the chair of the Gilman School’s music department and a member of their piano faculty in Baltimore, Maryland. Previously, he was an associate piano faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. A recipient of numerous awards, prizes and scholarships, Dechosa won third prize in the 1996 Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition and the 1994 Santa Barbara Symphony International Piano Competition. In addition, he placed first in the 1993 Five Towns National Competition and the 1991 Great Neck Symphony Young Artists Competition.
